10 Constructive Things To Do When You Are Home Alone

So you are home alone, you are bored and you wish to make the most of this time without leaving the comfort of... wherever it is you reside. I for one can say that I've been in this situation many times and end up doing nothing but thinking about what I could be doing with all this time to myself.
However there is good news! Because a little while ago I figured out how to keep myself busy and not sloth around all day.

You could be alone for just an hour or two, or you could be spending days without the company of other human presence. So when your significant other leaves the home for a few days or when your roommate nicks down the street quickly, a lot of the time find yourself wondering what to do. Sure you can sit back and watch some TV or chill out on your phone or the computer playing games or browsing the web. But that's not very constructive and you are after constructive ideas right? Well keep reading on as I count down the top ten CONSTRUCTIVE things you can do when you are home alone! (You'll love the first one...)

10. Clean!

Oh great, you whisper. "Cleaning is just the answer I was looking for!" It's okay, there is a reason I put this at number ten and didn't leave it out of the list. (Not that this list is really in any order for the most part). That is because cleaning is not only a task that generally must be done anyway, it can help pass time quickly and also contribute as a form of relief. Whether you are stressed, bored of being home alone or just horny. When you are cleaning you feel better and so does your house! Look for things that don't get cleaned very often, especially behind furniture or objects, and give them nice clean. Knowing that behind the cleanness is more cleanness is a good feeling. Once you have finished cleaning, you will feel better knowing your home is cleaner than what is was and you have done something physical instead of wasting away the day.

9. Get Rid Of Things...

Pull out those old boxes stored away and decide if you really need to keep those old pair of shoes or the miscellaneous items you've acquired over the years. Most of the time you will want to keep things because they either bring back memories or you think they will have some use one day. But in reality you will forget about those items once you pack them up again. So why not donate some of your old "stuff" to charity and those in need or go the other way and make a bit of money on the side selling those old trading cards. Trust me, keeping boxes upon boxes of useless and a lot of the time meaningless items only makes your home look smaller than it really is.

8. Gardening

If you live in an apartment or are just unfortunate enough to not live on a property with a garden, this one won't apply to you, so you should move on to number seven. So you do have a garden? Then why not rake up those leaves and pull those dreadful weeds! Gardening is not an old person thing! No, no, no! Get out into the sunshine, pull on your gloves and dig in! Gardening can be found to be soothing and peaceful. It's also fun to learn what insects and creatures live outside on all the flowers and plants!

7. Write, Write And Write!

Writing is one of humanities most beautiful gifts. With writing you can express your thoughts, feelings, needs and desires! Write the story of how you first fell in love or what kind of person you were five years ago to what you are now. Write a blog post! (It's what I'm doing) Writing is also a good form of relief. Let your words flow as you open your heart to the world of text and scribbles!

6. Do Some Room Organisation

So many of you will think this one comes under cleaning. Well I can assure you that organizing and cleaning are two different things my friends! So you've cleaned your bedroom, now what? How about some scenery change! Move your bed to a different spot in the room, pack away your clothes in new places, change the way your desk is set up. Things like this can be fun, especially if you are into furniture moving and like keeping things new and fresh!

5. Exercise!!!

Keeping fit is important and sometimes all it takes is a few sit-ups, some push-ups, some star jumps, a jog around the block and an hours worth of meditating. Well... maybe not quite that much. But doing just 10 minutes of exercise a day, even if you don't leave your home, will help keep your body functioning properly. Have you ever taken a few days off of work or maybe during the school holidays just sat around and done nothing, then after your first day back you are sore and feel like giving up? Well that's because your body continually needs exercise. You'll thank me later.

4. Call An Old Friend Or Family Member

Taking the time to have a private conversation over the phone is a good way to communicate with someone you haven't spoken to in a while. So while you are home alone, sit back and enjoy a good old conversation with that someone who you've been too busy to keep in regular contact with. Of course, that's if they pick up the phone...

3. Plan A Surprise For Your Returning Companion!

So whether it was your roommate, friend or a family member that has left you to guard the premises from all those creepers and zombies outside your gates, you should plan a special surprise for their return! If you are into cooking, consider cooking them a nice meal or if it was someone special, maybe a glass of wine and some delicious baked veges with a roast? Well, that's if you are willing to go that far. I know myself it's so good to come home to a cooked tea with a delightful beverage. It makes my day all the more complete. Otherwise if cooking is not for you, maybe set up camp in the living room and shoot them with a nerf gun when they come home through the front door. What's not to love about being shot, right?

2. Update Your Resume

This is a good one for those who are possibly in-between jobs or are starting and completing courses. Sit down with a cup of tea, coffee or whatever you please, hop onto your computer and bring up that old resume your once used a long time ago. Go through and check all your information is up to date and add any new courses you've been studying over the last few months or years. Keeping an up-to-date resume will greatly save time and hassle later on when you rely upon it once again to get you into a job interview or possibly straight into a job itself. It's always good to spend a good half an hour or so keeping this important piece of documentation renewed and fresh!

1. Home Maintenance

So this one is primarily for those of you who actually own and live in your own home. However minor property maintenance can be done if you are renting. I myself am a proud home owner and maintaining my house is of top importance to me. When I am alone with nothing to do, I will wonder around the house, checking things, making sure there is no damage and planning what I would like to do in the future to various rooms and locations around the property. Plan renovations that you would like to take place one day or go nail down that loose board in the yard that you've been meaning to do. These things are fun (if you are like me) and will have you feel like you've accomplished something important today.

So that's it! This is my personal list of Ten Constructive Things To Do When You Are Home Alone!
If you enjoyed my list, please share with a friend or maybe a family member who you plan on leaving home alone one day. It was fun writing this and with your support and feedback I can post more often and of better quality!

Have a fantastic time, home alone!

  2. I've just written a blog about being more productive at work so your article strikes a chord with me. It's so easy to fritter the time away in an unproductive manner and your tips on how to make good use of your time are invaluable. Next time I have a few spare hours, I'll refer back to your list.
